Park in town centre car parks from less than 7p a day

Short stay charges in Oadby and Wigston start today, 4th January and residents and non-residents can now buy passes online here*.

The scheme has been revised following a consultation of residents, businesses and other organisations. Local councillors and officers have worked hard to make the scheme as low-priced as possible, within the budget limits that the council faces due to government cuts.

In particular, a residents’ discount has been successfully pushed by Liberal Democrat councillors, to recognise the contribution that council tax payers have made to the costs of running the car parks over the years.

* For a resident’s discount, you will need your Council Tax Bill reference (may also found on bank statement if you pay by direct debit) and evidence which shows the vehicle registration and home address on the same document. This can be the front cover of the V5 Vehicle Registration document, a bill of sale, a lease or hire agreement or car insurance document (if address shown).

Discounted 6-month and Annual Passes

A range of parking passes offer discounts on parking in the Borough. A six-month pass for Oadby town centre car parks is £12.50 for Borough residents. That’s less than 7p a day or under 50p a week.

A six-month pass for the Wigston and South Wigston town centre car parks is the same price.

Other options include a pass for all town centres (£25 for six months, equivalent to under 14p a day) or a pass for all the Borough’s car parks (£37.50, equivalent to less than 21p a day) or a pass covering only the Leisure Centres and Brocks Hill Park (£12.50 equivalent to under 7p a day).

Blue Badge holders will continue to be able to park for up 3 hours free.

The limited number of existing free 20-minute spaces will be increased to 30 minutes and will stay free. The number of these spaces across the Borough will be increased from 8 to 30 spaces.

Visitors from outside the Borough will also be able to buy passes, although Borough residents will have discounted rates.

You can also choose to Pay as You Go, from £1 for 2 hours in town centre car parks and £1 for 4 hours at the Leisure Centres/ Brocks Hill.

Why are short-stay car park charges happening?

The Borough Council have been forced to charge for short stay car parking as the Conservative government have continued to cut budgets for local authorities. The Conservative MP has supported these cuts in Parliament, not just once but twice.

There arre 25 car parks in Oadby and Wigston. These cost the council nearly £100,000 a year in business rates alone, with water/ drainage, lighting and maintenance bringing the annual bill most of the way to £200,000.

Car Park Meter Update

Councillor Ian Ridley writes:

Yesterday, the car park meters were uncovered in the Borough car parks to allow the solar panels on them to charge prior to the start of car park tariffs on 4th January.

Several councillors received reports that unfortunately, the machines were accepting money and the signage to say that the charges started on the 4th wasn’t clear in some cases.

I understand that officers will now ensure that the machines are switched off until the 4th.

I would like to apologise to drivers, businesses and faith groups for any confusion this may have caused.

Short-stay car parking remains free in Oadby and Wigston until 4th January. After that discounted season passes are available allowing drivers to park from less than 7p a day.

Refunds

If you paid at the machines yesterday or pay at any time before the 4th, please if possible keep the ticket and a note of your car number plate.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council will publish details on how drivers can claim back their monies and I will pass this on as soon as information is published.

Christmas Wrapping Paper, Cards and Real Christmas Trees

Plain Wrapping Paper can go in your recycling bin (green bin with a brown lid) as long as you remove gift tags, sticky tape, string, bows and ribbons. Please do not include shiny metallic and laminated paper, tissue/crepe paper, paper containing glitter and gift bags. These should all go in your general waste (black bin).

Real Christmas trees can go in your garden waste bin (if they fit), are accepted at the Oadby Tip (opening times below) or can be collected: please contact the Borough Council’s Customer Services on 0116 288 8961 or csc@oadby-wigston.gov.uk between 4th January and 31st January 2022 to arrange collection.

Like wrapping paper, plain Christmas Cards can be put in your recycle bin but those with glitter, embellishments and batteries should go in your black general waste bin. Where possible, take out the battery and recycle separately at the Oadby Tip or other collection sites.

Oadby Tip Opening Times

This time of year can mean that some households have more waste / recycling than normal and the Oadby Tip is an extra option to recycle or dispose of items like batteries that are harmful to the environment. A list of items accepted at the Tip are here.

The Tip is operated by Leicestershire County Council. They have said that the Tip is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Please be aware that because of this, the Tip may be busier than normal and try to time your visit for when it may be usually less busy (we find that is sometimes shortly after opening).

As the Tip is normally closed on Thursdays and Fridays, we believe that this means that the revised Christmas and New Year opening times are:
