Every year Oadby and Wigston Borough Council compile the electoral register of local residents who can vote.

The forms are now dropping through letter boxes in St. Peter’s. It is easy to confirm your details online by following the instructions on the form (I’ve just done this for our household).

You can also confirm the details by phone or text message or return the form in the post.

Registering to vote is a legal requirement. It also means that you can have your say in local and national elections. Being on the electoral register can also improve your credit rating for everything from mortgages to mobile phone contracts.

Keeping Your Information Private

Access to the full electoral register is strictly controlled, but there is a version, called the ‘open register’, which can be bought for non-electoral activities.

The good news is that you can remove your details from the open register when registering or at any point thereafter by contacting the Electoral Services office at Oadby and Wigston Borough Council

If your anonymity is important, such as for those fleeing domestic abuse, there is an option to register without appearing on either list. Applicants will need certain documentation and again should contact Electoral Services.

This Thursday: Oadby Residents’ Forum

The next quarterly meeting of the the Oadby Residents’ Forum will be on this Thursday 19th July at 6.30pm at Trinity Methodist Church, Worship Centre, 60 Harborough Road, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 4LA

The meeting is a open to Oadby residents and community organisations. Local councillors and council officers are available for a “surgery” session between 6pm and 6.30pm if residents wish to discuss local issues in confidence.

Meeting papers and an agendaare available here.

The Forums were introduced by the Liberal Democrats several years ago to transfer some decision-making and limited spending powers directly to residents and community organisations in Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston.

They have been highly successful as a way of residents improving Oadby and as an effective means for residents, officers and councillors to communicate.

Please do come along this Thursday.

Wigston Road Traffic Lights

The temporary cones and tape at the junction

Some months ago the railings on the pedestrian island at Wigston Road / Brabazon Road traffic lights were damaged.

The broken railing was removed after the issue was raised with the County Council by Jeffrey Kaufman.

Further queries by County Councillor Jeffrey Kaufman and myself have revealed that a replacement is on order but it is not known when the repair will be done.

I think that the barrier is there for a reason: to protect pedestrians. It is important that the repairs are carried out on a crossing used by cyclists and pedestrians including those travelling to nearby schools every day.
